The beginning of 2011 offers huge opportunities for nurse practitioners and NP students to get involved in matters of vital importance to our profession and to consumer access to health care. The 2011 NCSBN APRN Summit, the “Campaign for Consensus: Uniting APRNs, Promoting Uniformity and Fostering Collaboration,” was held in San Diego last month to help state Boards of Nursing and other interested parties understand and plan implementation of the Consensus Model for APRN regulation. Look for a report on these efforts in the next issue of NP World News. On another professional front, APRN organizations need to respond to the very positive recommendations for NPs appearing in a report of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) entitled The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. Winter 2011 is continuing to take its toll in certain parts of the country, with endless snowstorms in the Midwest and the Northeast, and freezing rain and unprecedented cold temperatures in the South. This weather has no doubt added to your patients’ acute and chronic health burdens—and to your busy appointment schedules. But we hope that you’ll take time to read the content of AJNP February 2011 Online.
The articles appearing in this issue provide useful and important information for your practice. The articles include Relationship between Overweight/Obesity and Risk-taking Behaviors in Adolescents, by Michele L. Polfuss, Janice Liebhart, and Rachel Neff Greenley; Female Genital Cutting: An Overview, by Hannah Priscilla Sandy; and Collaboration and Partnership Between DNP Clinicians and PhD Nurses, by Claudia Valdez-Lowe and Kimberly Campbell-Voytal. We also joyfully honor Dr Loretta Ford on her 90th birthday and proudly announce that The Pearson Report 2011 will be arriving—exclusively at www.webNPonline.com—in March.
May the groundhog fail to see his shadow on February 2 and give us hope for an early spring. Happy Valentine’s Day to all!
