The beginning of 2011 offers unprecedented opportunities for nurse practitioners and NP students to get involved in matters of vital importance to our profession and to consumer access to health care. The 2011 NCSBN APRN Summit, the “Campaign for Consensus: Uniting APRNs, Promoting Uniformity and Fostering Collaboration,” was held in San Diego on January 12 and 13 to help state Boards of Nursing and other interested parties understand and plan implementation of the Consensus Model for APRN regulation. Look for a report on these efforts in the next issue of NP World News. On another professional front, this year APRN organizations need to respond to the very positive recommendations for NPs found in the Institute of Medicine’s report entitled The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. If you are not familiar with either of these endeavors that are so vital NP practice, please search for them online to get the latest information.
On yet another “front,” the winter of 2010-2011 has produced history-making rainfall, flooding, snowstorms, blizzards, and arctic temperatures across the country. This “extreme” weather has no doubt added to your patients’ acute and chronic health burdens—and to your busy appointment schedules. But we hope that you’ll take time to read the content of AJNP January 2011 Online.
The articles featured in this online issue provide useful updates and reviews for your practice. They include Managing Complications in Patients with Cirrhosis and Hepatocellular Carcinoma, by Patrick Michael Horne; Legionnaires’ Disease, by Jacqueline Rhoads and Faye Mitchell; and Management of Atrial Fibrillation, by Rachel M. Galati. In his regular column, Promoting the NP Profession, Tom Bartol discusses the importance of healthcare practitioner collaboration, which ties in nicely with the theme of the NCSBN APRN Summit.
We urge you to stay warm and dry, catch up on your professional reading, and continue to support students by being preceptors when you can. We value your service as expert clinicians.
